We are

a family-run hospitality and wellness start up, trying to bring Ghazalian principles of focus and connection to a wider audience. Based in the Cairngorm National Park in the Scottish Highlands, our aim is to create a place of refuge and rebalancing, where people can return to their more natural selves.

Slowly

we are building accommodation units and a small holding operation. We have had various setbacks, which we believe are chances to learn and make the world a more beautiful place.

We are looking for

one or two to help us make and grow. People who have energy and openness; a soft heart and strong hands if you like. We are flexible in terms of required skills. There are two broad categories: a caretaker of PEOPLE, with companionship and growth, and a caretaker of PLACE, developing the plot.

Meaningful work
and time to explore

Both roles are part-time occupying 20 hours a week, with the exact schedule to be discussed and agreed in person. The roles are on-site, with private, self-catered accommodation included. The salary is £13 per hour.

Unfortunately, we are only able to accept people who have an unrestricted right to work in the UK, as we will not be able to offer visa sponsorship. One day we hope the UK returns to being a more open place.

We are flexible as to whether you apply as an individual or as part of a pair. The key feature is working with people who we think would be a good fit, rather than procuring a very specific skill set. In addition to helping us look after overnight guests, there are two general roles:

1.Caretaker of PEOPLE

You will be patient, flexible and warm. You will have an intuitive and sensitive way with people, and offer both light-hearted fun and diligent responsibility.

Your focus will be helping people grow and develop personally, through regular and one-off activities. The actual activities are weather and context-dependent and need to be agreed. Dùthchas is well resourced and can offer cooking, baking, art, music, a gym, archery and gardening on site. On our doorstep, we have lochs, rivers, forests and mountains (or hills as they are called here!).

There is scope to work with young and old people, and people who have had significant challenges in their lives. If this is not something that appeals to you, please do not apply! You will need to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme (Disclosure Scotland). If you are not a member already, we will fund and support you with this.

0.Caretaker of PLACE

You will be resourceful, practical and pro-active, with an acute sense of stewardship (خليفة). You like solving problems neatly and efficiently, with imagination and as little waste as possible. You are physically capable and like being outdoors.

Your focus will be on developing the plot. There is a lot to do! In the next few months we would like to build:

  • a bee area with two hives
  • a veg patch with several raised beds and compost bins
  • an upgraded, pine marten-proof chicken coop
  • an outdoor bathroom
  • a deck for a yurt
  • a caravan parking area

In the broader scheme, we plan to build new terracing and a couple of natural ponds.

Our Offer

The job comes with accommodation in the form of a detached 1-bedroom cottage next to the pine trees, with a wood-burning fire and fully equipped kitchen.

Dùthchas is a Scottish Gaelic word with a complex meaning encompassing the reciprocal relationships between land and people, rights and responsibilities.

It is the name of our house.

We want Dùthchas to be a place where people have the time and space to return to a more natural version of themselves. We hope to offer this to you.

We are a mixed family, mixed up some would say! We are Muslim, Jew, English, Scottish, Welsh, Bengali and Iraqi. Yes, seriously. We invite you to come and work with us and help make the world a (marginally) better place, as full of Light and Beauty as we can possible make it إِنْ شَاءَ ٱللَّٰهُ
